A minor candidate in Women's Studies must choose two courses from the
following list for a total of 6 units of elective course work. This is
in addition to the 12 units of required
course work for a combined total of 18 units.
CWLA 260G Intro to Creative Writing: Women's Writing Workshop
Practice in two or more types of creative writing with close analysis
of each student's work. Participants examine the roles and challenges
of women writers in society and explore narrative possibilities unique
to writing by women. Prerequisite: ENGL 111.
CWLA 461 Writing and Gender
An examination across genres of issues and writing in their historical
and political contexts. Emphasizes the discovery and analysis of common
themes, narratives, and strategies in women's writing and how they compare
to writing within masculine traditions. Prerequisite: 200 or 300 Lit class
or CWLA Workshop.
ENGL 150 Women Writers
A survey of women authors with examination of how they portray both women
and men in their writings. Offered typically at Mat/Su campus.
ENGL 303 Women's Autobiography
Reading and analysis of contemporary women's autobiographies. Practice
in writing an autobiography. Prerequisite: ENGL 111.
HUMS 150 Marriage, Divorce, and Intimate Relationships in the 90s
Exploration of behaviors, values, attitudes, and consequences of contemporary
patterns of marriage, divorce, and intimate relationships from the perspectives
of American culture, ethnic groups, and students. Topics: values and attitudes
toward family, sex roles, marriage, and divorce; traditional and contemporary
relationship options.
HUMS 350 Men and Masculinity
Examines masculinity and male sex roles from historical, cultural, and
socio-psychological perspectives with a focus on males as clients in the
human service setting. Examines male socialization and its influence on
men in areas such as family and work, sexuality, and physical and mental
health. Prerequisite: SOC 101 or PSY 111.
PHIL A415 Feminist Philosophy
Examines womens position in the writings of
prominent thinkers in the Western philosophical canon; contemporary theories
concerning the nature of gender and its intersection with race, class,
and sexuality; and feminist contributions to philosophical inquiry in
ethics, social/political philosophy, theories of knowledge, and/or the
philosophy of science. Prerequisites: WS A200 or 6 credits in philosophy,
and Junior standing.
SOC 342 Sexual, Marital, and Family Lifestyles
Theories and research that explain today's marital, family, and sexual
lifestyles as well as class and cultural variations found in the U.S.
Includes a survey of why and how people meet, interact, love, fight, change,
sustain, or dissolve relationships, have children, and age together. Prerequisite:
SOC 101 or SOC 275.
SOC 352 Women and Social Action
A television course that focuses on women who are working together in
diverse social settings for empowerment. Over 70 individuals contribute
their experiences and ideas about social action. Prerequisites: SOC 101
required and WS 200 recommended.
SOC 452 Violence in Intimate Relationships
Focuses on factors in society such as norms, laws, and institutes that
may produce and/or perpetuate violence among intimates. Current prevention
and treatment programs aimed at reducing violence are covered. Prerequisite:
SOC 101.
WS 401 Seminar in Women's Studies
Discusses issues related to women's studies. Content varies every semester.
Prerequisite: WS 200.
